The Best Hiking Gear For Beginners

The Best Hiking Gear For Beginners

As a newbie to hiking I was always trying to figure out which gear would be the best to make sure I have an exciting yet safe trip. As I looked around the internet I decided to ask some experts about what they feel is the best hiking gear for beginners to get into hiking. Here is a list of products that were recommended to me, I personally use, or found during research.

A Good Backpack Will Make The Trip Much Easier

There are a ton of backpacks out there that are nice but might make it difficult or uncomfortable for a long hike. You want to make sure you can carry the supplies you need and not have major backpain after the hike.

Venture Pal Backpack

The first suggestion and the one I recommend the most is the Venture Pal Ultralight Backpack.

Venture Pal Ultralight Backpack

This backpack is very durable and lightweight. It never gets uncomfortable and for people who are overweight like I am, it makes life easy.

At the time of this post the backpack is on sale from $68.99 to $20.99 and if you have prime can even ship in two days. Pretty much a steal at the moment. I would take advantage of this offer while it lasts.

Lightweight Waterproof Backpack To Protect Your Electronics

I love the idea of this. Not because I want to be connected to the outside world but for safety and I like working in the woods. As someone who works on their computer, I enjoy bringing my laptop and writing in the peace and calm of nature. This allows me to bring my laptop without having to worry about any flash rain potentially ruining my devices.

I also like to bring a GPS in case my phone dies or cannot connect to a GPS. There are other safety electronics as well that can help you stay safe in case something happens on the trial.

This is where I introduce the Camel Waterproof Hiking Backpack.

Camel Waterproof Backpack

This backpack is great if you are looking for something that is waterproof and can hold everything you need. It isn’t as compartmentalized as other bags so you wont have slots for everything but for a beginner is a very good bag to start your camping and hiking journey.

If you are looking to buy this backpack it is now available for $27.99 (normally $29.99). So you can save $2. Something is better than nothing.

Water Bottles

Staying Hydrated is one of the most important things you need to do while hiking. Having enough water is very important especially on long hikes. I will give you my personal favorite waterbottle which on long hikes I carry up to 4 of them just because they keep the water cold and don’t condensate on the outside of the bottle so nothing gets wet on the inside. I will also give you the most recommended one from hikers and campers I have met along the way.

This water bottle will rock your socks.

The MIRA Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Water Bottle is the best water bottle I have found on the market for its price. This bottle claims to keep the fluids cold for 24 hours or hot up to 12. I have never had to test the length of it because I usually drink it all way before then. What I can say is that it does keep it cold for a long time.

This water bottle doesn’t leak or condensate so you can keep it in your bag without worrying that everything will get wet. I have used it for water, soda, and tea and it kept them all cold.

Mira Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Water Bottle

These run between $11.22 (17oz) to $18.50 (25oz) right now. They come in a ton of colors. This is the color I choose.

Nomader Collapsible Water Bottle

This water bottle was recommended due to the fact it carries a good amount of water, is dishwasher friendly, BPA free, durable and leakproof. It is an easy to transport waterbottle that is a favorite among hikers and campers alike.

This 22oz bottle comes in many colors and can handle any type of drink you want to put in there.

The Nomader Collapsible Water Bottle is durable and comfortable to drink from. One of the major issues with water bottles like this is the comfortability of drinking from the bottle itself. Many of them have the cap hit you in the nose or have a weirdly designed spout.

Nomader Collapsible Water Bottle

This water bottle is leak-free and highly recommended.

It is now on sale for $21.95 from $24.95 (save $3). This one water bottle will last you on a hiking trip.

First Aid Kit

While doing research on first aid kits my wife came across this kit. We found it perfect for our hiking adventures. The Lifeline Trail Light Dayhiker First Aid Kit is a perfectly sized first aid kit for hiking and camping.

Lifeline Trail Light Dayhiker First Aid Kit

This kit is perfectly priced at $9.90. There are other great options out there but this is the only one I have used.

If you want to buy this you can click the image above or click this link Lifeline Trail Light Dayhiker First Aid Kit.

Headlamp/Flashlight

Having vision in the night is important especially if you overstay during a hike or get lost.

The one I use is the LE Headlamp LED. This is a cheaper headlamp but it does a good job. It looks goofy and the batteries don’t last a very long time. I think you should carry an extra set of batteries on your camping trip (which is smart to have anyway).

LE Headlamp LED

If you are looking to get this headlamp it is currently on sale for $7.99 from $18.95

You can buy this headlamp by clicking the picture above or click this link LE Headlamp LED.

Outlite A100 Portable Ultrabright Handheld LED Flashlight

My best friend who is an avid outdoorsman loves this flashlight. So much so he bought all of his friends one of these for Christmas. This flashlight has an adjustable focus and 5 light modes.

This flashlight can see a huge area. It is water resistant so if it gets wet it won’t stop working. I was very impressed with this flashlight because it is a very high-quality flashlight.

Outlite A100 Portable Ultra Bright Handheld LED Flashlight

If you are looking to get an awesome flashlight that fits easily into your backpack and does everything you need it to on a camping or hiking trip. This is the flashlight for you.

This flashlight is normally $49.99 but as of right now on Amazon it is currently $11.45. I would get this flashlight now before they raise it back to the normal price.

If you are looking to buy this flashlight click the image above or click this link Outlite A100 Portable Ultra Bright Handheld LED Flashlight.

Food

There are a ton of options here but if you are going on a long hike I recommend buying Mountian House 5 Day Emergency Food Supply Kit. From talking to many hikers who have purchased this they say it is more for 3 days than 5. Since most people will eat a full pack. People who have tried to make it last 5 days say you get really hungry over that time since you burn so much energy on a hike. That portion of each pouch isn’t huge so you will be hungry if you only eat half of it.

These are meant for one person but you can do two if you split the portions in half. Again it depends on the person as well.

The nice thing about these is all you have to do is add water. So there isn’t a lot of prep that goes into using them. I have never used this product but from the people I talked to and some research, it seems like a good goto product for food.

Mountian House 5 Day Emergency Food Supply Kit

Other campers and hikers told me they like sandwiches, fruits, hot dogs, dried fruits, beef jerky, cheese, and non-parishables.

Multipurpose Tool

For hiking and camping, I really find it useful to bring a multipurpose tool. If there is anything you need to be done it can help you accomplish the task with ease. The tool I use is Promaster Smart and Simple 15 in 1 Tool.

This tool has wire cutters/ stripper, needle nose pliers, regular pliers, double-sided nail file, hook remover, can opener, folding saw, sharp knife, bottle opener, small screwdriver, medium screwdriver, big screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, fish scaler and a ruler.

Pro Master Smart and Simple 15 in 1 Tool

This is a must-have for experts and beginners alike. It will come in handy for any need while on a hike.

Right now it is on sale for 50% off at $12.47 (previously $24.97).

Get it now while it is on sale for such a great price.

You can click the picture or buy it here Promaster Smart and Simple 15 in 1 Tool.

Hiking Shoes

This is really based on preference and comfort but here are some hiking shoes I found that have good reviews.

Women’s Breathable Waterproof Hiking Shoe

Mountbeyond Womens Waterproof Hiking Shoes

This hiking shoe for women not only looks good it is designed for hiking. It is waterproof and breathable so your feet can be comfortable throughout the hike even when raining.

Mountbeyond Womens Waterproof Hiking Shoes seem perfect for any hiking trip and has great reviews.

This shoe is normally $99.99 but is not currently on sale for 42% off for $57.99.

I would get these while they are on sale.

Columbia Men’s Redmond Waterproof Hiking Shoes

Another waterproofing shoe. Since I don’t own a pair of hiking shoes yet and just always used standard outdoor shoes the pair I am considering is the Columbia Men’s Redmond Waterproof Hiking Shoes.

They are waterproof and from what everyone says they are comfortable. There is a downside is when you walk you can hear a slight crinkle from the waterproofing. People say it is only noticeable if you are paying attention to it or it is dead silent.

I will take a slight crinkle for a great waterproof hiking shoe. Having soggy shoeshalfwayy through a hike isn’t fun. With my running shoes, I end up with blisters on the back of my feet.

Columbia Men's Redmond Waterproof Hiking Shoes

I am a 10.5 size shoe and the current price is $72.99 from $90.00. With so many good reviews I am going to give it a shot. Plus 19% off isn’t to shabby. The price does vary based on size so just make sure you look at the price after you choose your size.

Compass

The Ladweather Sensor Master IV Compass is an all in one compass with many features. This compass has an altimeter, barometer, compass, weather forecast, hygrometer, and thermometer. It gives you all of the information you need to know for any hiking or camping trip. A great tool for any hike.

Ladweather Sensormaster IV Altimeter/Barometer/Compass/Weather Forecast/ Hygrometer/Thermometer

This tool is usually $106.00 but is currently on sale for $38.99. There is a limited supply so I would hurry and get it while supplies last.

Compass/Whistle/Firestarter/Knife/Para-Cord Survival Rope All In One

When doing research on some compasses I came across this gem. The Keekom Fire Starter Paracord Bracelet. This survival bracelet has a boatload of tools that will help you on your hiking trip. Just as the title of this section says. It has a compass, whistle, firestarter, knife and a para-cord. This all can go around your wrist.

When reading about this tool I thought it was going to be expensive but it is actually very well priced at $9.99.

Now, this tool fits around wrists between 6.5 and 8.5 inches comfortably. Worst case scenario you put it in your backpack.

Sunscreen For Hiking

You can really use any good sunscreen but if you’re looking to order your sunscreen online as well here is a product that comes with two 10oz 50 SPF sunscreen tubes (comes with an alcohol flask as well). It is the Beach Tropics Broad Spectrum 50 SPF Sunscreen.

Currently on sale for $11.98 (from $13.95) for two tubes. This sunscreen will definitely be good enough to protect you on a hiking trip.

Sunglass

One of the most popular outdoor sunglasses is the J+S Active PLUS Cycling Outdoor Sports Athlete’s Sunglasses. With over 1500 reviews and a 4.5 star rating out of 5, these sunglasses are amazing. They have 100% UV protection and are very comfortable.

They come with a 100% satisfaction guarantee and a 1-year warranty.

These glasses range from  $14.99 to $18.99 depending on which design. These sunglasses were formally $34.99. So get them while they are on sale.

Tents

When looking at a backup tent in case something happens like a bad storm or you get tired on a long hike. Getting a tent that will give you space is important. I prefer a minimum of a two-person tent (especially when you have two people) but a 4 person wouldn’t be bad as well. Here are two options when it comes to tents that are affordable and great for the trip.

2 Person Tent

Flytop 2-Person Double Layer Backpacking Tent is a great two person tent that is easy to setup and not difficult to carry.  Spacious and comfortable this tent is a very good option for hiking.

Flytop 2-Person Double Layer Backpacking Tent

This tent currently runs at $89.99.

Click the image above or this link Flytop 2-Person Double Layer Backpacking Tent to purchase.

4 Person Tent

The APLS Mountaineering Lynx AL 4 is a great tent if you need a lot of space or people hiking with you.

From what people are saying they have used this tent through many storms and never gotten wet so it does a great job keeping you dry.

ALPS Mountaineering Lynx AL 4

This 4 person tent is currently running at $119.99 from $249.99. I would get it now while it is 52% off and supplies last. This is a steal for such a nice tent.

Hiking Gear For Beginners

When starting as a beginner the one thing I learned is sometimes what works best for other people wasn’t the best for me. I took the safety tips seriously and have been blessed enough to have never been injured. I will be making a post on this later.

All of this gear is recommended but not what you have to buy. You can buy things that better suit you for your needs. I just wanted to give you recommendations based on what people have told me and I have experienced for myself. A few things on this list is just pure research since I didn’t get a lot of feedback from other hikers on which to use.

So hopefully the best hiking gear for beginners post helped you figure out what you should use when going on your first hike. You don’t need all of these things if you are going on a short hike but I would take the safety gear and food just in case you get lost or something happens. Cell signal isn’t always good on hiking trails so don’t rely on that as your survival backup.

Thank you so much for checking out this post and if you have any questions leave it in the comment section below.

  1. Wow, this is a lot of great ideas on hiking gear. First off I love the Venture Pal back pack. Especially all the neat colors…hey I am a girl. Also the first aid kit, flash light, and tool is great. Actually a lot of really great ideas here for hiking items. I am going to go check some of them out. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Thank you for sharing. The Venture Pal Backpack is extremely nice. My wife likes it as well and she is a girly girl. She mainly goes to take photos (She’s a photographer). Yeah they are just nice things to have so you don’t run into any bad situations unprepared.

  2. These are some great items to bring on a hiking adventure. I enjoy hiking and only have a couple of things. Thank you for showing everything that would benefit the hiker in me! 🙂

  3. Wow, you didn’t a pretty nice job of overwhelming me. Trying to find just the basics for a quick trip now that the weather is starting to get nice.

Have you tried out that two-person tent and if so do you think it will work for a person over 6 foot?

    1. Didn’t mean to overwhelm you :). Just wanted to give as many options as possible.

      As for your question.

My best friend (the one that recommended hiking to me) is 6’2 and I am 5’10 and we both fit in it well. So you should be fine.

  4. I make sure I visit this site again to get all my things ready at the time of hiking, good listing and advises.

    Tar

  5. Wow, this is a lot of information! Looks like you pretty much covered everything a hiker should need. I was wondering about cooking stuff. Will you be doing a post to help us with cooking for camping as well? I would definitely read that.
    Great pictures here as well.

    1. I will put that on my content calendar for a future post. That is a great idea for a post. It definitely helps to get feedback like this. Thanks!

  6. Wow with this awsome rewiew I feel like going on a hiking trip next weekend but I have to order the multitool and the paracord first that seems like some good product to have with me.

    1. That tool is awesome for more than just hiking and camping. I know people who bought it just to have it for road trips. Can always come in handy.

  7. So great hiking gears. All recommendations are not heavy and really useful. Go hiking is really a good way to close the nature. I am also wondering to know is there any hot food for hiking? Sometimes really want to eat or drink something hot.

    1. For drinks, the first water bottle on the list actually can keep liquids hot as well. I know people that put coffee instead of water. It just depends what you are feeling.

You can make tons of hot food over a fire. Just make sure you cook it well. The just add water foods are a good option. Just boil the water which will require you to bring something like the Biowow Camping/Hiking Stove. You can bring whatever hot food you want to cook with this.

  8. Hi 🙂
Well done! I thought I knew what to take when I go hiking bit you convinced me of the opposite. Thanks for the great new ideas!
    Loved the backpack!

  9. I am an avid outdoor enthusiast and I like your site a lot. I use a few of the products you have listed here and would be willing to try some of the others.
